\"\"<\/a>Malamocco, a village of yesteryear.<\/h2>\n

AN OUT-OF-THE-WAY, QUIET LITTLE VENICE, WITH CALLI, COLORFUL HOUSES AND A SMALL HARBOUR, WHERE HUGO PRATT FELT AT HOME.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Malamocco is a village of fishermen, vegetable growers and lace-makers<\/strong> that the cartoonist Hugo Pratt<\/strong><\/a> fell in love with, so much so that several Corto Maltese stories <\/strong>are set here. It stands in a secluded area of the Lido, at the southern end of the island, where you can stroll along calli<\/em> and campielli<\/em> as if you were in a little Venice, and savour the seafood cuisine: <\/strong>fried fish and polpette<\/em> (fish balls) are some of the islanders\u2019 favourite dishes!<\/p>\n

The history of this village goes back over a thousand of years: heir to one of the oldest sites in the lagoon (the mythical Metamaucus<\/em>), it was the ducal capital<\/strong> from the 8th to the 9th century, where the first Venetian doges <\/strong>had their seats before moving to Rialto.<\/p>\n

The 15th-century Palazzo del Podest\u00e0<\/strong>, overlooking Campo della Chiesa \u2013 where two ancient wells<\/strong> can also be seen \u2013 houses a permanent exhibition of archaeological finds<\/strong> from excavations conducted in the immediate vicinity of the Palazzo, and in other areas of the Lido and Pellestrina.<\/p>\n

Opposite the Palazzo is the Gothic-style church of Santa Maria Assunta<\/strong>, whose side elevation dominates the Piazza Maggiore. It houses the precious statue of the Madonna di Marina<\/strong>, celebrated every July with a historical religious procession.<\/p>\n

The ancient village of Malamocco is a stop in the “Lido island among art, nature, sea and lagoon<\/a>”\u00a0<\/strong>itinerary, one of the ten\u00a0Venetian craftsmanship and creativity routes<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0promoted by the City of Venice.<\/p>\n
