\"\"<\/a>Venice churches.<\/h2>\n

THE SCUOLA DEI CARMINI, AN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY VENETIAN JEWEL, WHERE YOU CAN LOSE YOURSELF IN TIEPOLO’S BLUE AND PINK SKY.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Founded around the 9th-10th century, the Church of San Giacomo dall\u2019Orio<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is one of the oldest churches in Venice.<\/p>\n

The church boasts a very rare fourteenth-century wooden ship’s keel roof<\/strong> (built by the Arsenalotti<\/em>, highly skilled craftsmen and boat builders) and a gem-like green marble column from the ancient Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem<\/strong>, brought to Venice as war spoils at the time of the Fourth Crusade. It was also admired and described by Italian writer Gabriele D’Annunzio<\/strong> in the early 1900s in its novel The Flame<\/em> as ‘the fossilized condensation of an immense green forest’<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The church is home to some of the masterpieces of Venetian Renaissance painting<\/strong>, such as the Virgin with Child among the Apostles and Saints<\/em>\u00a0on the main altar, dated 1546, one of the few paintings by Lorenzo Lotto<\/strong> in Venice.<\/p>\n

The Old Sacristy contains an exceptional pictorial cycle by Jacopo Palma the Younger <\/strong>dedicated to the theme of the Eucharist and its origins in the Jewish Passover (Easter). The New Sacristy, a sort of small museum, is embellished with five magnificent paintings by Paolo Veronese<\/strong> that cover the ceiling.<\/p>\n

Campo San Giacomo dall’Orio<\/strong> is an ideal spot for a break, sitting on the benches near the flowerbeds and trees opposite the Renaissance apses of the church. Here the local residents often sit to read and soak up the sun in the serene and relaxed atmosphere of the square.<\/p>\n
