\"\"<\/a>Titian’s house.<\/h2>\n

TITIAN’S HOUSE IN CANNAREGIO, NOW INHABITED BY VENICE’S LAST BATTILORO.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Titian\u2019s house<\/strong> stands in Campo del Tiziano, in the Cannaregio district. The painter bought it following the death of his beloved wife Cecilia in 1530. There is also a small flower garden<\/strong>, which seems to have been part of the great master\u2019s house even then.<\/p>\n

It is said that Titian felt nostalgic for his native Cadore, and that he chose this house partly because he could see its mountains<\/strong> from here, before the Fondamente Nove were built. When the artist died in 1576, a number of unfinished canvases<\/strong> were found in his studio: one of these is now in the Doge\u2019s Palace<\/strong>, in the Sala delle Quattro Porte<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Part of the house is today inhabited by the last battiloro<\/em><\/strong> (gold beater) of Venice, Mario Berta Battiloro<\/a><\/strong>, heir to a centuries-old tradition, who transforms gold into very thin sheets by hand.<\/p>\n
