\"\"<\/a>The Venetian Christmas Eve dishes<\/h2>\n

From Venetian style creamed cod to bigoli in salsa<\/em>, from sweet-and-sour sardines to mandorlato<\/em> (a type of hard nougat): let’s take a look at the recipes that represent the food Christmas tradition in Venice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Christmas Eve is traditionally part of the advent fast period, and fish is the star of Christmas Eve dinner.\u00a0Let’s start with an old traditional food eaten during the night before Christmas, the risotto di bosega<\/em>, a creamy risotto with grey mullet<\/strong>, a typical fish of the Venetian Lagoon. The fish is boiled and served with potatoes, while a delicious risotto is made with the fish stock.<\/p>\n

Another fish dish that will certainly not be missing on a Christmas Eve dinner in Venice is the famous bigoli in salsa<\/em><\/strong>, a sort of thick spaghetti\u00a0with an\u00a0onion and sardine sauce<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Among the main courses, in addition to sea bass<\/strong> and bis\u00e0to<\/em><\/strong>, stewed eel with polenta<\/strong>, there is Venice-style dried cod<\/strong>, served with polenta or on slices of crusty bread. A classic Venetian side dish is sarde in sa\u00f3r,<\/em><\/strong> in which sardines are deep-fried then left to marinate with onions and vinegar. It is one of the most famous Venetian foods and an excellent example of how Venetian cuisine is able to invent rich flavours from very simple ingredients and techniques.<\/p>\n

And finally, the very popular mandorlato<\/em><\/strong>, a nougat made of honey, sugar, egg whites and almonds, considered a Christmas sweet since the ancient time of the Serenissima.<\/p>\n
