\"\"<\/a>The Saint who gave rise to the legend of Santa Claus<\/h2>\n

On 6 December<\/strong>, the island of Murano<\/strong> celebrates Saint Nicholas’ Day<\/strong>, here called San Nicol\u00f2<\/a><\/strong>, the 4th-century bishop of Myra, noted for his generosity. St. Nicholas is known to be the protector of children, but he is also the patron saint of Murano glassmakers<\/strong> and their ancient art. Saint Nicholas’ primary relics are preserved in Bari (southeastern Italy), city of which he is the patron saint, whereas the rest of the saint’s bones are kept by the Venetians in the church of San Nicol\u00f2 at the Venice Lido<\/a><\/strong>. Another Venice church dedicated to the saint who gave rise to the legend of Santa Claus or Father Christmas<\/strong> is the beautiful church of San Nicol\u00f2 dei Mendicoli<\/a><\/strong>, in the Dorsoduro district.<\/p>\n
