Venice is an extraordinary city<\/strong>, unique in the world, and a\u00a0UNESCO world heritage site<\/a><\/strong>. It is, without doubt, one of the most famous cities in the world. Yet even Venice \u2013 instantly recognisable to anyone with eyes \u2013 has the capacity to surprise. Perhaps not everyone knows that in Venice there are:<\/p>\n

  1. Venice Lagoon<\/a><\/strong>, 550 square kilometres wide is Italy\u2019s biggest wetland area<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  2. Venice\u2019s oldest church<\/strong>: San Giacomo di Rialto<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 known by the Venetians as San Giacometo<\/em> \u2013 founded on March 25th<\/strong> 421 A.C.<\/strong> which, according to tradition, is the birth date of Venice<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  3. One of Europe biggest State shipyards<\/strong>: the Arsenale<\/a><\/strong>, founded around the year 1104<\/strong>, to which Dante Alighieri dedicated four triplets of the Divine Commedy<\/em> canto XXI Hell<\/em>.<\/li>\n
  4. The world’s oldest Lazzaretto<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(infirmary), founded in the year 1423<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  5. The first Italian Jewish Ghetto<\/a><\/strong>, set up in 1516<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  6. One of Europe\u2019s oldest public museums<\/strong>: the Republic statue museum, inaugurated in 1596<\/strong>, today National Archaeological Museum<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  7. Venice\u2019s oldest theatre<\/strong> still existing today: the Goldoni Theatre<\/a><\/strong>, inaugurated in 1622<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  8. World oldest casino<\/strong>, opened in 1638<\/strong>: Venice Casino<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  9. The theatre \u201crisen two times from its ashes<\/strong>\u201d: Teatro La Fenice<\/a><\/strong>, founded in 1792<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  10. The bell tower<\/strong> on July 14th 1902<\/strong> and was re-built exactly as the original ten years later: the St Mark\u2019s bell tower<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  11. Venice maritime defence<\/a><\/strong>: more than 100 military architectural buildings<\/a><\/strong>, built from the 15th to the 20th Century<\/strong> and located in the lagoon, in the littoral and in the mainland.<\/li>\n
  12. Marghera<\/strong> is the largest industrial hub in Italy<\/a><\/strong>, built in 1917 as alternative to Venice port, and an urban district<\/strong> designed according to the model of the garden cities by the engineer Pietro Emilio Emmer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
