\"\"<\/a>The island of San Lazzaro degli Armeni in Venice.<\/h2>\n

For over three hundred years the\u00a0island of San Lazzaro degli\u00a0Armeni\u00a0has been a slice of\u00a0Armenia<\/strong> in the Venice lagoon. Here there is a monastery which houses a small\u00a0community of Mekhitarist monks<\/strong><\/a>, and is one of the first centres in the world of\u00a0Armenian culture.<\/p>\n

Originally home to the Benedictines of Sant\u2019Ilario, from the 12th century forward the island was chosen as a place of quarantine for lepers<\/strong> and used as a\u00a0lazaret<\/strong>, from which the name San Lazzaro derives. After a period of abandonment, in 1717 the island was donated by the Serenissima to\u00a0Mekhitar, founder of the Mekhitarist order, fleeing from Turkish persecution and taking refuge in Venice with his fraternity.<\/p>\n

The monks devoted themselves to study, turning the island into a\u00a0centre of culture and science<\/strong>, intended to keep the language, literature and traditions of the Armenian people alive. The monastery is open for visits every day<\/a><\/strong>, booking via email visite@mechitar.org or by phone +39 0415260104; you can get there by taking the vaporetto Line 20 from San Marco-San Zaccaria stop<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The hidden gem of the island is the library<\/strong>, which preserves thousands of ancient volumes and over four thousand manuscripts and illuminated codes, considered one of the world’s most important collections of Armenian manuscripts.<\/p>\n

Inside the monastery there is also, in addition to the\u00a0printing house of the late eighteenth century, an\u00a0art gallery\u00a0with works by\u00a0Armenian painters and a\u00a0museum\u00a0where are collected archaeological finds of\u00a0Armenian, Greek, Egyptian and Indian origin, including the\u00a0Egyptian mummy of Nemen Khet Amen<\/strong>, considered one of the best preserved in the world<\/strong>, complete with sarcophagus.<\/p>\n
