Sant’Erasmo Island.<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a>Venice is surrounded by an archipelago of beautiful, small islands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Sant\u2019Erasmo<\/strong>, a green paradise, is the only island in the north lagoon where you can ride a bicycle<\/strong>: four kilometres of vegetable gardens and vineyards, meadows and dirt roads, and also a small beach<\/strong>. Here is an itinerary for enjoying a walk in close contact with nature<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Since the Middle Ages, Sant\u2019Erasmo has been known as the orto di Venezia<\/em><\/strong> (Venice’s garden<\/strong>). The soil of the island naturally contains a good mix of sand and clay, which makes it ideal for growing fruits and vegetables,\u00a0first of all the delicious purple artichokes of Sant’Erasmo<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0SlowFood presidium.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

The island is also well known for its flavourful cardoons and asparagus<\/strong> and for its wine<\/strong>. In the ancient vineyards of Sant\u2019Erasmo, now revived, grows the Dorona di Venezia variety<\/strong>, native to the Venetian Lagoon. There are a number of farms on the island where you can taste and buy the local wine<\/strong>, as well as the other local products.<\/p>\n

The best way to explore Sant\u2019Erasmo is on a bicycle<\/strong>. You can hire bikes on the island and go for a ride around Sant\u2019Erasmo<\/strong>. Also, kayaking and taking a boat tour<\/strong> are wonderful ways to explore the lagoon archipelago.<\/p>\n

Two things not to miss when visiting Sant\u2019Erasmo? The Maximilian Tower<\/strong>, a 19th-century fort sometimes used for art exhibitions and events. It took the name of Maximilian, archduke of Austria<\/strong>, who took refuge here during the popular uprising in 1848. In the main square of the island, the church dedicated to Christ the King<\/strong> holds a canvas by Tintorett<\/strong>o, the Martyrdom of Saint Erasmus.<\/p>\n

You can get to Sant\u2019Erasmo taking ACTV line 13, from Venice (Fondamente Nuove) or from Cavallino Treporti. Take a look at the timetables and the map of the ACTV lines<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
