In the peace of the lagoon, lies a ghostly island, a vanished city: this is Torcello<\/strong>, mythical site of Venice’s origins<\/strong>, the first inhabited island of the lagoon.\u00a0The shores of this island have been beloved by great artists, crowned heads, stars of the stage and heads of state<\/strong>: not least writer Ernest Hemingway<\/strong>, who spend long periods of his life here. Every year, on August 15th<\/strong>, the Museum<\/a><\/strong> and the Basilica of Torcello<\/a> open to the public free of charge<\/strong> (10.30 am – 5.30 pm). During recent conservation work in the basilica, restorers discovered exceptional fragments of 9th century frescoes<\/strong><\/a>, which are the oldest in the Venetian area.<\/p>\n
