\"\"<\/a>Historical villages of the island of Pellestrina<\/h2>\n

Multicoloured<\/strong> houses, small flower-filled gardens<\/strong>, a few restaurants where you can taste the true lagoon food<\/strong>, sandy beaches, a seafront for peaceful walks and forty hectares of protected natural reserve:<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0this is the island of Pellestrina<\/strong>, a thin\u00a0stretch of land between the Adriatic sea and the lagoon.<\/p>\n

You can go around the island on foot, by bus or bicycle<\/a><\/strong>: getting lost is impossible, just follow the road along the Murazzi<\/strong>,<\/a> Istrian stone dam walls which were built by the Venetian Republic\u00a0 \u00a0in the 1700s to protect the lagoon from the sea.<\/p>\n

Just around the corner from the small quiet village of San Pietro in Volta<\/strong>, the Museo della Laguna Sud (The little museum of the southern lagoon)<\/a><\/strong> tells the story of the Murazzi and the flooding in 1966. Continuing south you’ll find Portosecco<\/strong>, a tiny village whose patronal feast, on August 15, is one of the most popular events on the island. Then it\u2019s the turn of Pellestrina<\/strong>, a picturesque small town known for its four sestieri Scarpa, Zennari, Vianelli and Busetti. <\/strong>They\u00a0derive from the names of the families sent there by the mayor of Chioggia to repopulate the island after it was destroyed by Genoa during the war against Venice towards the end of the 1300s.<\/p>\n

While walking around the villages of the island, you can still find women\u00a0<\/strong>making lace outside their home. Typical of Pellestrina, bobbin lace<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is a lacemaking technique made by braiding and twisting lengths of thread wound on bobbins called fuselli<\/em>. Bobbin lace is also known as pillow lace, because it is worked on a pillow.<\/p>\n

The island of Pellestrina is the kingdom of sea and lagoon food<\/a><\/strong>. Experience Pellestrina’s culinary delights such as bossol\u00e0, rings of crunchy bread<\/strong>, or the traditional fish pie<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
