\"\"<\/a>The island of Giudecca<\/h2>\n

Venice\u2019s Giudecca island, called Gnecca<\/em> by the locals, is the small island opposite St Mark\u2019s Square<\/strong>, a fascinating district, where you can experience everyday<\/strong> Venetian life<\/strong>, and a sort of Venice’s SoHo<\/strong>, home to ateliers, galleries and exhibition spaces<\/strong>.\u00a0It’s just a short vaporetto ride<\/a><\/strong> from Riva degli Schiavoni or Fondamenta delle Zattere.<\/p>\n

As you walk along the main fondamenta<\/em>\u00a0(canal walkway) facing the Giudecca Canal, you come across some of the most beautiful churches<\/strong> on the island. With its imposing white fa\u00e7ade, t<\/strong>he Redentore<\/a><\/strong> (Church of the Most Holy Redeemer), Palladio\u2019s most famous church<\/strong>, dominates the waterfront. Built after the plague of 1575-1577, it\u2019s a votive church, at the very heart of the Festa del Redentore<\/a><\/strong> (the Holiday of the Redeemer), one of Venice\u2019s most important traditional events, celebrated on the third Sunday in July each year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

One of the Giudecca\u2019s most visible landmarks<\/strong> is the Casa dei Tre Oci<\/a><\/strong> (House of the Three Eyes), an impressive-looking building with its three large windows based on the same design as those in the Doge\u2019s Palace. Today it\u2019s a public exhibition space dedicated to the art of photography<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Since its origins, Giudecca\u00a0was home to boatyards and artisans\u2019 workshops<\/strong>, such as the rope making: an example is the long Corte dei Cordami<\/strong>, where the sailors used to weave ropes outside their homes. There are two working squ\u00e9ri<\/strong><\/em>, Venice’s traditional gondola shipyards:<\/strong>\u00a0the Squero Crea<\/a><\/strong>, whose owner is Gianfranco Vianello, called Crea<\/em>; and Roberto Dei Rossi’s squero<\/a><\/strong>, open since 1983.<\/p>\n

On the island there is also the factory founded<\/a><\/strong> almost a century ago by Mariano Fortuny<\/a><\/strong>, known for his exquisitely patterned fabrics. Although the factory itself allows no visitors in order to maintain Mariano Fortuny\u2019s trade secrets, the showroom is open to the public on weekdays<\/strong>, and the adjacent gardens can be visited by appointment.<\/p>\n
