\"\"<\/a>Discovering the Regata Storica, past and present of Venice.<\/h2>\n

Sunday 5th September, the season of rowing regattas<\/strong><\/a> culminates with the Regata Storica<\/strong>. It’s a day of celebration: the Venetian rowing festival<\/strong>. All of Venice seems to be gathered at the Grand Canal, watching the Regata from their own boats. Venetian rowing<\/strong> is a unique discipline in the world, practiced for millennia in the Venice lagoon. You row standing and forward, using only one oar instead of two: in any other place you generally row sitting and backwards, maybe using two oars\u2026<\/p>\n

The regattas in Venice are as old as the history of the city; they were established early on to train the crews at the oar. The first visual document of a regatta can be seen in the “Pianta di Venezia”, engraved by Jacopo d\u00e9 Barbari<\/a><\/strong> in 1500. Since then, the regatta has marked the representation of a \u201cfestal\u201d Venice in the works of quite a few generations of artists. Around 1740, Canaletto<\/strong> painted a regatta on the Grand Canal<\/a><\/strong>, just like today.<\/p>\n

The Regata Storica is made even more spectacular by the opening procession of antique vessels<\/strong> that precedes the rowing races. The brightly colored parade consists of tens of 16th century-style boats, carrying gondoliers in historical costume, the Doge, the Doge\u2019s wife and high-ranking Venetian officials up the Grand Canal.<\/p>\n

After the pageant, four separate rowing races<\/strong> along the Grand Canal take place, each one on different boats: the first regatta is reserved for the young on pupparini, the second one for male crews on six-row caorline, the third one for women on mascarete with two oars and the last one, the most awaited and exciting, is the race of the gondolini.
