\"\"<\/a>Four things you might not know about Venice Carnival
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

ONE OF ITALY\u2019S OLDEST CARNIVALS, THE <\/strong>MOST RENOWNED IN EUROPE FOR CENTURIES<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Venice Carnival is one of the most popular events<\/strong> in the city\u2019s calendar.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Dating back to 11th century<\/strong>, it is held every year in the weeks leading up to Shrove Tuesday<\/strong> (the day before Ash Wednesday): it marks a period of excess, public performances, masquerade balls and banquets before Lent, the 40 days of fasting in the run up to Easter.<\/li>\n
  2. The Venice carnival was once outlawed by the Government<\/strong>: the term appeared for the first time in 1094<\/strong> in a decree issued by the Doge Vitale Falier, referring to public festivities held before the start of Lent. The feast was then officially established in 1296<\/strong>, when the day before Lent was declared a public holiday.<\/li>\n
  3. Venice was renowned for its masquerade parties during the 18th century,<\/strong> when its carnival reached a climax. The atmosphere of that period is brilliantly expressed in the paintings of Pietro Longhi<\/a>, Francesco Guardi<\/a>, Giandomenico Tiepolo<\/a> and Gabriel Bella<\/strong> in two Venetian museums \u2013 the Querini Stampalia<\/a><\/strong> (read the museum guide<\/a><\/strong>) and the Ca\u2019 Rezzonico museum <\/a><\/strong>(read the museum guide<\/a><\/strong>).<\/li>\n
  4. Since 1797, Napoleon and then the Austrian domination had decreed an end to costume and public festivities. Revived in 1979, the Venice carnival has become a longstanding tradition<\/strong> celebrated every year.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Venice Carnival 2021<\/a><\/h3>\n

    The Venice Carnival 2021 will be live streamed online on the official social channels<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0as a series of events celebrating its origins, traditions and curiosities<\/strong>. The online event will take place over eight days \u2013 from February 6 to February 7<\/strong>, and then from February 11 to February 16<\/strong>. During this time, a vast array of exclusive performances will be broadcast online, from Ca\u2019 Vendramin Calergi<\/a><\/strong>, which hosts the Venice Casino. Find out more!<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n
