\u201cDetourism: Venice newsletter\u201d<\/strong> is the newsletter prepared by the Tourism Office of the Town of Venice which is sent free of charge to hundreds of subscribers every week, providing valuable food for thought and insights on the history, art and culture of Venice.
\nWe are proud to publish some\u00a0selected contents of such newsletter (see previous post: \u201cDetourism for the Up and Down the Bridges<\/a>\u201c). On our website, in several episodes, we will only present some samples (see all posts in our archive page “Detourism Newsletter<\/a>“), but the invitation addressed to all the friends of the Up and Down the Bridges is to fill in the online form<\/a> proposed by the Town of Venice to receive it directly in their email box every week.
\nSpecial thanks to the Councillor for Tourism for having enthusiastically welcomed this new important collaboration between TGS Eurogroup and the Tourism Office of the Town of Venice<\/strong> and for giving us the precious opportunity to publish on the pages of this blog some extracts from this newsletter, both in Italian and in English.<\/em>
\nAs previously announced, (see post “Detourism: Venice’s neighbourhood”<\/a>), today we start discovering all Venetian neighbourhood, one by one<\/strong>! Let’s start with San Marco<\/strong> district. Enjoy the reading!

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

San Marco district, originally called Rivoalto<\/strong> (the present-day Rialto), is the original nucleus of the city<\/strong>. The heart of the district is represented by Piazza San Marco<\/strong>, the only piazza<\/em> in Venice: all other open spaces in the city are called campi<\/em>.<\/p>\n

At the very centre of Venetian life, the square is dedicated to the Evangelist Mark, patron saint of Venice<\/strong> since his relics had arrived in the lagoon in 828 AD, after being adventurously stolen from Alexandria in Egypt.\u00a0Here are Venice\u2019s most imposing buildings<\/strong>, such as Palazzo Ducale<\/a><\/strong>, the residence of the Doge and the seat of government.\u00a0A monumental entrance called the Porta della Carta<\/strong> is on the fa\u00e7ade facing Piazza San Marco and next to Saint Mark\u2019s Basilica<\/a><\/strong>, the Doge\u2019s private chapel until 1807; opposite, the bell tower<\/a><\/strong>, known as the paron de casa<\/em> (the \u201chouse owner\u201d), 99 meters high.<\/p>\n

On 14th July 1902<\/strong>, the tower suddenly collapsed. It was rebuilt and inaugurated ten years later.\u00a0The building that encloses the far end of the Piazza San Marco is known as the Napoleonic Wing<\/strong>, which now houses the Correr Museum<\/a><\/strong>. Next, you can find the National Archaeological Museum<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Under the arcades of the Procuratie Nuove, you can also find Italy\u2019s oldest caf\u00e8<\/strong>, Caff\u00e8 Florian, opened in 1720 by Floriano Francesconi.\u00a0The island of San Giorgio Maggiore<\/strong>, with the monumental complex of the Cini Foundation<\/a><\/strong>, also belongs to the San Marco district.<\/p>\n

Not to be missed in the San Marco district: Clock Tower<\/a><\/strong>, Bridge of Sighs<\/strong><\/a>, Marciana National Library<\/a><\/strong>, Royal Gardens<\/a><\/strong>, La Fenice Theatre<\/a><\/strong>, Palazzo Grassi<\/a><\/strong>, Scala Contarini del Bovolo<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n
