Segnalazioni | Autore: Lo staff della Su e Zo

Thanks to “Detourism: La newsletter di Venezia”, the official Town of Venice Tourism Office Newsletter, today we are going to discover everything about some of Venice’s most iconic historical palaces that host Venice’s Universities, colleges and schools. Enjoy your reading!

Venice is home to prestigious universities such as Ca’ Foscari University and Iuav University, as well as two historic Art and Music schools, Benedetto Marcello Conservatory of Music and Venice Academy of Fine Arts, hosted in ancient palaces of high artistic, historical and architectural value. Among their most famous alumni are Italian politician and economist Ugo La Malfa, pianist and conductor Gian Francesco Malipiero and architect Carlo Scarpa.

Ca’ Foscari University of Venice

Founded on August 6th 1868 as Trade High School, the head office of the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice is housed in a spectacular Gothic palace overlooking the widest curve of the Grand Canal. It has over 20,000 students, and offers 40 different foreign languages courses. Temporary exhibitions featuring documents from the University Historical Archive take place on the ground floor of Ca’ Foscari palace. Special guided tour will take you inside Ca’ Foscari historic palaces.

Università Iuav di Venezia

Università Iuav di Venezia is the only University in Italy that offers courses in all the disciplines of project planning: architecture, urban planning, design and multimedia, fashion, theatre and visual arts. Online exhibitions explore the collections of architectural drawings and images held at the University Archive. Architecture exhibitions are regularly staged at Ca’ Tron, overlooking the Grand Canal, at the Tolentini complex – whose entrance area was created by Carlo Scarpa – and at the former Venetian cotton mill. Massimo Scolari’s wings are visible on the roof of the cotton mill.

Benedetto Marcello Conservatory of Music

Benedetto Marcello Conservatory of Music, a traditional musical institution, fraught with history, vivid culture, elegant memories, was founded in 1876. It is located in Palazzo Pisani, Venice’s most imposing patrician palace, second in size only to the Doge’s Palace. Visitors can explore the palace via guided tours. The library is among the most important in Italy and has a heritage of over 60,000 volumes; the Music Museum has a collection of ancient instruments, manuscripts and memorabilia. Performances and events regularly take place in the spectacular Concert Hall.

Venice Academy of Fine Arts

The Accademia di Belle Arti, founded in 1750, is one of the oldest Academies of Fine Arts in Italy. Its first President was Giambattista Tiepolo. Not far from the head office, the former Ospedale degli Incurabili (a building complex designed by Italian architect Sansovino), the Academy has an exhibition space, the Magazzino del Sale n. 3, just next to the Vedova Museum (the Venetian artist Emilio Vedova taught at the Academy for over a decade).

Venice is also home to other important institutions: the Venice International University, a consortium of 20 universities from all over the world, on the island of San Servolo; the Global Campus of Human rights, an inter-disciplinary centre of excellence supported by the EU; the Faculty of Canon Law Saint Pio X, the only one in Italy existing outside of Rome. Mestre hosts the Venice Salesian Institution of Higher Education.
